The wait staff were amazing and so loving. We were seated right away and they gave us 2 baskets of chips and Salsa. Which were made fresh, the chips were still hot and the Salsa was AMAZING! The food was great and very filling. I ordered 2 ground beef tacos which came with a side of rice and beans. The tacos were huge, I definitely wasnt expecting that. I couldnt finish the remainder of my food but my cousins did hahah. One of my cousins ordered a Long Island Ice Tea, which BTW were from Long Island, and it was great! For $10 they give you a small pitcher. We also ordered a pitcher of Sangria which was great. If your in the area I would highly recommend coming here! Especially for Happy Hour!!
Had late night nacho cravings and this place did not disappoint at all. The portion size was huge and covered in carne asada and melted cheese with the works. It was heaven! My boyfriend ordered chile verde, which was delicious as well but I was focused mainly on the nachos. The service was A and while you sit and eat in the bar, you can also watch football.
I love this Mexican restaurant in Columbia City. It is definitely one of the more "authentic" Mexican eateries in the Seattle area. I used to live on the border of Mexico. This is one of the only places around that ranks on that level. Additionally, they have one of the most hearty chicken tortilla soups I've ever had. They don't skimp on any dish portions--believe me. Just like typical restaurants in Mexico and along the border, they automatically serve chips and salsa--yes! Thank you!!! So glad I found this place. Aces on the hospitality as well. Viva El Sombrero!!! Aye aye! Oh--that's me in the sun glasses and black T. Say hi!
Perfect place for a great Mexican meal with family, friends or happy hour. I have been here few times and have always enjoyed it. I like the fact that they serve free chips and salsa and it's delicious as opposed to some other Mexican restaurants in Seattle. Be adventurous with ordering their special cocktails and be amazed.....have fun!
Recommend the chicken fajitas (big enough to share with someone, or take home leftovers)
Nachos!Margaritas!
We have eaten at El Sombrero about 5 times. The first a lunch with chili rellenos and a hamburger burrito was great. The 2nd and 3rd with steak fajitas was alright but nothing to get excited about. The 4th was carne asada burrito which was great. Last night we had the carne asada burrito and it was inedible with tiny specks of overcooked flank steak and mostly pinto beans and rice. We recommend that you never drink at this restaurant. My companion had a Cadillac marguerite which had tequila and a minimum of salt and then ordered a smaller version that came without tequila and seemed to be only the marguerite mix and no salt. I had what was supposed to be a double Tanqueray and tonic. It only had one shot. The people at this restaurant are very nice but I think the bar is well below par. We won't go back although we live nearby.
This was a real disappointment... One star ONLY because of location. $16.53 for a Carne Asada burrito! $.25 addl' charge for "to go" container. I'm sorry, was I supposed to carry it out in my hands?? You can't order tacos a la carte, their "side" tacos for $2.25 are a tortilla with some meat slapped in it, NO toppings or each one is an additional charge. I've never felt so nickle and dined in my life...Of all the Mexican food places I've eaten at ( and I've grown up on it) this was by far the worst. I should've known from the moment I walked in and never saw an actual Hispanic person besides the workers. Don't bother with this place.
Can be loud with large families but their small bar has the best margaritas and some date night appeal. Shrimp enchiladas are my favorite food item!
Mmmmmm. This places makes seriously delicious Mexican food. So far I have tried the spinach quesadilla, beef taco, chicken enchiladas, and chicken fajitas. Oh man was everything fantastic. Full of flavour and so fresh. But what I would like to highlight the most was the fried ice cream dessert. Not only was it amazing for my taste buds, it was also gigantic. I mean I could eat it on my own if it was all was eating in one sitting, but due to the delicious food I stuffed my face with prior, I had to ask for some reinforcements. As a bonus the staff is super nice, and the place is very clean.

The place is a little rundown but the food is pretty decent and you get a bang for your buck! The staff is super friendly. Very family oriented. Drink specials on point
Great lunch after a nice walk in Seward Park. First impressions were really good, our waitress was cheerful and helpful, and the salsa and chips, well, lets just say I could have eaten them as my whole meal! I ended up getting the pork/beef burrito. Portions are HUGE, especially considering the price, it's a great deal here. Rice was well seasoned and cooked, and the burrito was everything you would expect from a burrito, juicy, packed full of meat and super flavorful. I finished it all up with a deep fried ice cream (again, huge portion), and that was awesome too! Was it the best mexican meal I've had? No, but was it a great priced, flavorful, and satisfying meal? For sure! El Sombrero will really give your a bang for your buck, and a little "fiesta" in your mouth too :)
Decent, but nothing special. I ordered chicken fajitas, which were a little low on flavor. My wife couldn't get what she wanted (enchiladas rancheros I believe) because they were out, so she had to settle for a verde sauce. She also thought hers was a little bland. For what we paid, the quantity was fine -- we took lots home -- but quality could've been better.
Large portions! One us enough for two moderately hungry adults.
Chimichangas are delicious and they don't use American cheese!
Favorite Mexican restaurant. Always have a great meal and good experience here. Expect to waddle out of the place: That's the only downside. Family operated and they are quite friendly here. I love the Chile Colorado here. Very flavorful.
Maybe . . . . . . the complainers in their posts should try something a bit more adventurous than the burritos and enchiladas. I'm not going to be nice about this -- if you only order run-of-the-mill entrees like burritos, enchiladas, etc., then chances are you're only going to get average food. Branch out from the usual fare, and try something different for a change! My husband and I do always order the same thing -- he gets carne asada, his favorite dish, and I get Chile Colorado, which is my favorite dish. I consider myself a bit of a connoisseur of Chile Colorado, having ordered it every time that I possibly can at every Mexican restaurant that carries it. My experiences have run the gamut from mediocre, sauce-out-of-a-can and tough, chewy meat to delicate, nuanced chile sauce and tender, generous chunks of beef. El Sombrero is definitely in the latter category. Their chile colorado sauce is spicy without the heat being overbearing, the blend of spices is superb, and the hint of lime accents the sauce. My husband is always pleased with his carne asada. We've always had excellent service. Then again, we always have a positive, pleasant attitude when we walk in -- something which I find gets you a lot better service than being demanding and difficult. Our food and drinks arrive promptly, our order is never botched, our waitstaff is consistent, and our bill has never yet been inaccurate. We tip generously and receive good service. Can't say enough about the margaritas. They're the size of a baby's head. I haven't had a bad one yet. I usually stick with the traditional lime, but had a mango last time, which went down very smoothly. They don't stint on the tequila, either, so be prepared. Overall, we enjoy El Sombrero for what it is -- a family neighborhood restaurant with no pretensions and good food.
So much love for this place! I am a Mexican food snob. So is my husband (who grew up in New Mexico). Back home, we frequented a little joint almost weekly for authentic family-owned delicious yumminess. They sadly had to close down after being open for 20 years. We traveled far and wide and never had anything that came close to the food they served, until now. El Sombrero delivers! Always welcoming and great dining experience. They are very attentive without being disruptive and the service is FAST. From the fresh (sometimes warm!) chips & salsa that we always get two baskets of, to being SUPER kid-friendly (crayons, paper placemats to color, special kiddo drink cups you can take home)...it's always a pleasure to eat there! I LOVE their verde sauce. Their cheese enchiladas with verde sauce is to die for! My son loves going there too and asks for it. We always have to end the meal with their fried ice cream with caramel sauce. It's HUGE, so the three of us split it. Leftovers are almost always guaranteed as portions are plentiful! Our new Mexican food digs. =)
I'm from New Mexico, so I've had a tough time finding a place that meets my standards. I was pleasantly surprised by El Sombrero's Chile Colorado (chunks of succulent pork in a red chile sauce--perfectly balanced with a hint of sweetness and just enough spice). I like that their rice and refried beans are old-school Mexican, with no fancy vegetable crap in the rice, and the beans are served with melted cheese, the way they should be. Nearly everything comes with tortillas, which are decent. They also have a really nice seafood menu--try the shrimp in garlic sauce. Their Cadillac margaritas and Sangria are awesome, the salsa is fresh, and the service is always reliable. Food-wise...can be hit or miss. Your best bet for great Mexican food is one of the many places in South Park, along 14th Ave. S.
