Great service Food is wonderful good portions Hidden treasure in Seaside
In town for a conference so stopped in for dinner. Had shrimp chow Mein and it was decent. I called ahead and food was done upon arrival. Would eat here anytime if I lived in the area.
Westlake Chinese Restaurant And Lounge
Yeah, I'm a fan. It's classic American Chinese food. You can quarrel with the concept but they execute it very well. Our go-to dishes there are the House Special Lo-Mein (Chow Mein). Not quite the right noodle but close enough. Shrimp, scallops, chicken and slivered BBQ pork with veggies and noodles. Really nicely done. Again, it's "AC." Our other go-to is the Shrimp Chow Don, listed under "Scrambled Eggs." I would love to see scrambled eggs listed more often in "city" Chinese restaurants. The egg is a beautiful thing and a good Chinese restaurant treats it with as much respect as a French one. These guys do a good scrambled egg. It won't beat my favorite at "Dinesty" in Richmond BC, but it's a very good egg. With shrimp, onion, water chestnut and beansprout. Either of these would be a great one-dish meal. For two people, a fine combination. Yes, you can pay less and get their own combos or the "Make your own" and that's fine, but if you thoughtfully select from the main menu you can build a pretty credible American Chinese food experience of a very fine order. By the way, this is Cantonese and proudly so. I'm not sure why "Cantonese" has gotten such a bad reputation in the last 20 years. Maybe it's just that there are a lot of bad American Chinese places and, historically, they have been mostly Cantonese. Good Cantonese is based on fresh, simple ingredients, thoughtfully prepared and minimally cooked. Seafood should guide you. It's lightly sauced (usually). We've kind of messed up our relationship with this cuisine. We've come to expect a certain style of cooking, the restaurants want to please us, and we get into a feedback-loop that produced stereotypical "Cantonese." So stray off the combinations and you'll probably be better served, especially in small towns that have to have limited menu options. My only other advice is, if there is squid on the menu, order it. Well, at least if you like squid. It's there because it's an essential seafood and a Chinese restaurant that has it on the menu knows that and is, therefore, a "cut above."

My son and I went there for dinner and ordered their combination plates. He ordered sweet and sour chicken and I got the sesame chicken along with their pork chow mein and egg foo young. The food was inedible...the absolute worst chicken we've ever had. We couldn't tell if it was shrimp or chicken as the meat was so dried up and shriveled it seemed like we were chewing leather. The worst! The chow mein was so flavorless, bland, dull...just horrible. The egg foo young was covered in a cornstarch mixed with chicken stock or something...gross! We will never eat there again and left feeling hungry! When we told our server how bad it was her response was "well...no one has ever complained before." Yeah right...I don't believe it. Stay away from Westlake if you want good Chinese food because this place doesn't have it.
