excellent food!!! great service!!!!
The food is so good ???? and it’s a black owned family restaurant in Denver love it???????????????????????? and the vibe is unmatched!
went there last night. It's a family restaurant, which i thought was cool. 1st off, the customer service was THE BEST. Sooo friendly. I was a bit salty that they ran out of grape koolaid but it was close to closing time so it was probably my fault. The mac & cheese wasn't baked like i like but i was still good. They make their gravy from scratch. The vibe was amazing & the music they played was so inviting
Curry Goat is awesome
The food was just ok. I come from a the south where the food is good just about everywhere you go. I have been looking for real southern style food since I got here. I thought this place would fill that need and I left disappointed. The corn bread got hard as soon as it got cold. The candied yams tasted like candied carrots. The greens were seasoned but not to my liking. The fried catfish was good but the outer texture was a little rubbery.
Made to order beef patties are a great meal . Sweet tea was perfect . The service is friendly & feels like home . Not a fan of the peach cobbler. But the wings are crispy & shrimp is fried just right . Call ahead to place an order if your in a rush if not it's worth the wait .
I had a hard time giving 5 stars, rather than 4. I think the fried chicken here at Welton Street Cafe is not only the best fried chicken in Denver, but the best fried chicken anywhere. I am a fried chicken lover. When I travel or move to a new state, I check up on the fried chicken. Most people will get a great fried chicken and say its the best, well, I can tell them that I travel to those cities and states FOR the fried chicken. Thank the Good Lord I am now back in Denver. Funny thing, I never tried the chicken here before I left Denver, as I am a native to the city and the Whittier neighborhood. So finding it once I had moved back was a way for someone somewhere to reward me for a mighty good deed I must have performed. Now, the reason I had wavered with the star is for a few items that I thought were not up to 5 stars - definitely not because of the chicken. Nothing was bad, nothing was even below a 3. If you're looking for fried chicken, this is the place to go. Now this is one of the few really good reviews I ever give, I am trying to post a good one for every bad review I post, which is only fair. The closest you'll find to chicken almost this good is on the border of Maryland and West Virginia. Or was it Maryland and Virginia? or was it Virginia and West Virginia.... And if you've heard of any chicken that comes even a smidge close to this place - hit me up. No matter what state it's in!
New favorite must-stop whenever I come back to Denver!! First of all I found the place my very last day in Denver and subsequently I found all my Black people! The honey hot wings-- which is the staple dish of the establishment, lives up to the hype! The sandwiches were fire and the lunch combos were on point! Our beautiful waitress Nicole was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. She pointed out all the local hotspots and things to do around Denver and the Five Points community. Lastly the music!!! The 90s era r&b/hip hop instantly took me back to my childhood. Everything from Monica to New Edition-- WOW! Good music, good people, great vibes! Black owned in a Black Area! Gotta love Black people.
I had a working lunch meeting here today. What a wonderful experience at a restaurant that is clearly a Denver icon! Food: I had the Honey-Hot wings, fried okra and greens (seasoned with turkey). EVERYTHING was delicious and the price was extremely reasonable. My colleague had the beef and cheese pate and cut off a piece for me to sample. It too was very tasty. Customer Service: The customer service was top notch. In addition to one of the absolutely most friendlies waitresses, one of the owners and the front of the house manager stopped by to ensure everything was okay with our meal and experience. I also noted an individual who came in from the street who was clearly having some mental health issues and a bit disoriented about where he/she was. The front of the house manager treated the individual with great respect ensuring the dining experience remained pleasant but that he/she was treated humanely. That speaks volumes about what kind of business they are. Service time: It only took about 15 minutes from the time we placed our order until we received our popping hot food. Wifi: They have wifi that is available for customers to use. PERFECT for a working meeting! It's not hard to see how they've remained in business so long (since the early '90s is what I was told when I inquired). This is excellent soul food cooked with love and a Caribbean flair. No doubt about it -- I'll be back and will recommend it to others. Keep up the good work, Welton Street Cafe!
Welton Street Café in Denver - probably the best fried chicken i've ever had in my travels across America. Not only was the batter on the fried chicken and onion rings tremendous but the chicken was juicy within. Always a key... I do have to say that the Jamaican jerk chicken was completely off the hook with a smoky and spicy flavor and might have bested the fried chicken but that's like comparing Magic Johnson to Michael Jordan. Also honey hot wings, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, okra Winfrey, hush puppies, fry bread with honey, and the tube of hot sauce that reminded me of Stevie's on the strip over by Crenshaw High back in the day. Bon appétit my friends.
The food here is amazing. My fiance and I came up here for his birthday and he's a fried chicken man. So I reached the best fried chicken in Denver and they popped up. I was a little nervous at first since coming from New Orleans where great food is everywhere you turn. We made a phone order from the car once we got picked up at the airport. Our food was hot and ready in 30mins. The woman that took our order was very helpful and sweet. The mac n chess, yams and corn bread was a delicious soul food touch add to our chicken. We will definitely be back.
Came here for a work lunch and WOW it is amazing. So fresh and the employees are attentive and polite. I had their fried butterfly shrimp/fried catfish with black beans and rice and hush puppies. Everything was excellent except the hush puppies. They were a tad overcooked but the rest of the meal made up for it. They have past pictures of customers on the wall and it gives the place a warm feeling. I would come back here in a heartbeat!
Wow. Absolutely amazing. When you walk in, you'll be greeted by a many signs, one of which will tell you the current minimum wait time for that day. Usual minimum wait time is about 30 minutes. This is a given for fresh friend foods, especially chicken, and WELL WORTH THE WAIT! All their entrees are made fresh to order, so please be patient! The establishment is a small whole in the wall that seats probably 50 people at a time. They do take phone/to-go orders. There's a mixture or booth and mixed matched tables. What I think is so great is the fact that they put out fresh flower on the tables every day. It's really is a nice touch. While I was there, there was a gentleman in the corner playing old school smooth RnB music that was really enjoyable and staff just getting down and dancing when it's slow. We ordered the fried catfish dinner with red beans and rice and mac n cheese with corn bread, and the fried chicken dinner with collard greens and sweet potatoes. I could go into an in-depth description, but honestly, this is something you MUST try for yourself. It was phenomenal. Extremely homemade and perfect. I wish their sides were a bit smaller but you can tell every aspect of the food was made there and made fresh. Please check then out!! Definitely 5 stars
This place is where it's at if you are in search of some good soul food. I went here last night after a couple of co-workers mentioned them. Let me tell you, I was thoroughly pleased. The jerk chicken is the bomb and the fried catfish was even better. All the sides were great and so was the peach cobbler.
Totally torn and plan on a repeat visit to see what happens. Chicken wings were fresh and juicy, just too oily for me and the honey hot was way too sweet, almost like candy. Greens were on point. Cornbread was tasty. Fried okra was damn good. Still a bunch of things on the menu I wanna try. So next time it'll either be the jerk pork or the fried chicken or pates. Prices are reasonable. Service was super friendly. Yea, it's a little disorganized and there's always a wait, but as my Hawaiian aunt says, "Just get yourself on island time... you'll live longer." Awesome diners. Love the overall character of the place. I'll be back to see if I can't find that fourth star meal.
Love this place. The jerk pork is great. Takes a while but worth the wait! It's a five points which is bit of a gritty area of Denver - just in case you worry about those things.
My experience here exceeded my expectations! Great service and amazing food, so much yummmmm for my money. Tom's Home Cookin' has some competition. We wandered in here on a snowy Friday night and the place was pretty much empty. We scored a booth table, were promptly served drinks and had our orders taken. Although it took me an eternity to pick 2 sides from the laundry list of home cooked goodness. We were warned it would be 27 minutes until I received my piping hot plate of fried chicken-a nice courtesy if you weren't aware of the time required for really really good freshly fried chicken. Then we waited for what seemed suspiciously less than 27 minutes and were rewarded with 2 enormous plates of food. One HUGE plate of jerk pork with hush puppies and yams and another HUGENORMOUS plate of fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and fry bread. Mmmmm fried. The fried chicken was incredible. Crunchy, fresh, not too greasy, but moist and beyond delicious. Loved it. The mac n' cheese was a perfect amalgamation of all my favorite versions. The noodles were soft like my favorite childhood recipes, the sauce was a balance of creamy and cheesy that landed somewhere between velveeta and fresh cheddar and the flavor was out of this world. This might be my favorite old school, home style, take me back to childhood mac n' cheese in town. Also fry bread honey = yum. My boyfriend's plate of jerk chicken got a thorough visit from my fork. I loved the hush puppies (perfect crispy little corn balls) and the yams. But truly I couldn't keep my hands off the jerk pork. Tender, succulent, and juicy, soaked in a sweet and spicy jerk sauce that made me smile. Good food. Not fast. But serious home cooked deliciousness resides here. And it happens to be a 2 minute walk from my house. I win.
