I'm a sushi lover. I probably eat sushi once a week or so. I went out to Mikuni 3 times in the past week. I was taken there twice for my bday within 48 hours. I have totally been converted to Mikuni. I love to sit at the sushi bar. The chefs are very friendly and the fish is very good, actually great. My favs are bbq tuna with spicy sauce, black and white, incredible roll, Benjamin roll, and I haven't had anything I don't like yet. I tried the mackerel nigiri, and it was good as well. I don't even use wasabi here. No need. In fact I use about a teaspoons worth of say sauce for my whole meal. I trust the chefs 100%, next time I'm going to try Omakase....bring it on.
Let me start with the fact that I've been coming to the Mikuni restaurants (Fair Oaks, downtown, Roseville, and even Northstar-Tahoe) for almost 20 years. I believe that they have always offered the tastiest most unique sushi in the Sacramento area (and perhaps Northern California). I've always been a fan. I can handle the long waits for tables and food, since this place has always been popular and crowded due to the quality of the food and flair of the restaurants. Well, I have to say that perhaps that popularity may have finally gone to the owners' heads. While I'm used to spending a bit more on sushi than other places to eat at Mikunis, it usually is for good value. Tonight, after spending over $50 on what I thought would be an abundance of food, I came away feeling short-changed. I ordered the freaky edamame, a hand roll and two of the moderately priced rolls (plus an ice tea). When my food came, I couldn't believe how small the rolls have become now. In my opinion, it appears as though they downsized their rolls but kept the prices the same. I can only imagine that they feel they can charge more for less now since people seem still willing to crowd the place and pay their prices. Well, with a number of other choices in the area, I'm not so sure that I will any longer.
I had the bento box for lunch with the teriyaki chicken and gyoza. Very good and well prepared. The ambiance outside patio was very nice. Waiter was prompt and not a pain in the ass. Would definitely return.
I've been going to Mikunis for years and it's always been pretty good food. So we were happy that one opened up in Folsom. It's been super crowded since it's opened and it was pretty full on this Friday at 3PM. Not overly full but there was a lot of people there for afternoon eating. We were seated pretty quickly. Maybe 8 minutes since we requested to eat outside on their fabulous patio. It was great weather but the patio had fantastic heaters and a decorative modern fire pit. It was pretty cool. Now when you think of Mikunis, you automatically think of sushi rolls but I decided to go outside the box and order a beef curry on top of a pork cutlet with rice. It was fantastic. Very tasty and very filling. My wife and daughter got a chicken bento box and a beef/tempura bento box and they were really good too. Not the best I've ever had but they were good. Service was ok. Nothing spectacular. Pretty much average for your "chain" style better establishments. She was good. No complaints. But just run of the mill. Overall a pleasant experience and this may be my Folsom go to spot for bento boxes. Especially since they were only $11.
So the GF asked me to try this place. So this was no kidding my first time here. Totally giving this place a solid 5 stars. Everything about this experience was amazing. We sat outside on a great night had a beer and of course some saki. We ordered flaming shrooms and three rolls. The Aerojet roll made me feel like summer was in the air, the cucumber was fresh and full of flavor. Our server was very sociable. He made us feel like we were at home. We will totally come back here. And we will come back very soon. I had a sam Adams and she had the Kirin. Both went well with the dinner.
First things first the entire staff would always say "irishamase" which means "We welcome you to this establishment". The hostess would sit me down without delay and the servers were always ready to take my order. Every time I would come here to eat I would always feel quite welcomed. I always sit at the sushi bar due to either me coming in solo or coming in as a group. Having to talk to the sushi chef's is pleasant because they're there so that we can talk about sushi or life's problem together. I usually come here at not busy times so Monday thru Wednesday when there's no rush. The sushi here is delicious because they don't stick to the traditional sushi but you can order it. At Mikuni's they have special rolls that's not on the menu but it's the chef's signature dishes. I highly recommend Kura-san for his rolls because of its uniqueness and flavor. You're able to taste a plethora of umami flavors in his rolls. Each chef looks at their sushi as art so they're able to determine what's to my liking when I come there which is great! The kitchen food is also great too! I usually order pan fried gyoza or BBQ tuna mix as appetizers to start myself off. The red sauce is more sweeter than the white sauce so just a heads up. I always order the tan tan men but substitute for udon noodles instead. The chef that usually makes it is Miguel and his food always comes out tasting savory which makes me want more. This place is always a good place to come out with friends, family, or your partner. There's a bar for drinking if you like alcohol and a tv also to enjoy sports if you're a fan. Whatever it is though this place will make you feel like you're at home. So enjoy your time here if you ever get the chance to try this place out.
I have a love affair with Mikuni's! The one on Hazel was my very first sushi experience 19 years ago and I've been hooked (pun intended) ever since. They are always consistent with their rolls which is so refreshing. My favs are the Michi roll (I add extra cream cheese & lemon), the Benjamin roll, and the Aero Jet. For apps, the flaming shrooms, BBQ white tuna and the Albacore Pepperfin. My favorite drink if I'm not partaking in beer, is their Key Lime Moto! I'm only give 4 stars because their prices are really high but other than that, everything else is 5 stars!

Bento box for 11.50 included full size (8 pcs) of sushi and yummy teriyaki beef. Lots to choose from. Great service and nice comfortable atmosphere.
Went here for a belated birthday lunch and it was amazing! I've been to other Mikuni locations before and yesterday was my first time going to the one in Folsom. Abrianne was our server, and she is the nicest server I think I've ever met. She wasn't artificial or scripted like a lot of servers I usually meet. We had the Midtown, Ninety-nine, and Fair Oaks rolls along with the Speed Racer Hand Roll Combo (lunch special). The food was fast to come out. We didn't realize while ordering that most of what we got had fried ingredients, but it was so delicious. Unlike other Mikuni restaurants, this one doesn't have the birthday prize wheel, but they have a jar of Easter eggs where you pick one out and win the prize inside! I got a comfy t-shirt. Thanks Mikuni!
Third time in a row- best beef teriyaki in town: trimmed, tender. Just perfect. Albacore pepperfin is my new addiction. Not too hot, just right. And must have the Michi roll. Busy place. Friendly service. Moscow Mule recommended by Mr. Putin (great bar too).
So excited that Mikuni opened in Folsom. Favorite roll is the Train Wreck and Flaming Shrooms are the best appetizer. If you order hot green tea, they will leave a small carafe at your table. My daughter wanted to spin the birthday wheel but as of yesterday, they still don't have one. They are in the process of making one. Instead, you can pick an Easter egg with a note inside indicating your prize. Not as fun, but still free. I won a Tshirt back in November. They now carry Women's style. Mine was fitted but stretchy. It was really cute. Way better than the men's fit I won a few years ago.
Not sure why this place doesn't have 4 stars just like the rest of the locations. I feel like Mikuni is synonymous with Sacramento and has expanded as the city has. They keep expanding for a reason and I do not envision them slowing down at all! We arrived around 5 p.m. on Monday and there were seats open at the sushi bar and outside on the enclosed, heated patio. We opted for the sushi bar and were happy to see a familiar face in that of a sushi chef who used to work at Taros handing us edamame as we were sitting down. In fact, he was still wearing the Taro uniform and warmly said that he is still Taros at heart. Our server too our drink orders right away. They arrived quickly and my guest loved her dirty martini. When we were ready, our food orders were then taken. A quick and (not-so) dirty recap of the meal: - Miso: Great! Lots of tofu. Perfect starter. - BBQ Tuna app: Five pieces didn't sound like a very big portion, but it was. They are chunky (in a good way like a well-fed toddler) but a little lacking in flavor. Will pass on this next time. - Japanese mafia roll: DELICIOUS. Both of our favorites! We had the conversation about 'American' sushi and both guiltily said we love it hah - Incredible roll: Also, very good! - Train wreck: Good, but huge and a little hard to eat. Loved the chopped eel. We will definitely be back!
Don't be afraid to sit outside on the patio. They have heat lamps and it gets quite warm. Ask them to turn up the heat if it's not warm enough.
